WordPress

I should know better than to potter, or at least reserve my pottering until I have more experience behind the scenes, which is to say that I upset my database with a new plugin last night, and WordPress responded by deactivating all my existing plugins, which usually festoon the right hand column.  All is not lost, however: in fossicking around the help forums for the solution, I eventually found some tricks that seem to have worked, or at least plugged the gap with silly string.  What’s more, I found an alternative to the plugin at whose presence it all fell over.  The blogroll is now transferred to the tabulated index, as I originally hoped to do, leaving me with a cleaner single column at right.

Please let me know if you notice any further problems with feeds, links or anything else.

Meanwhile, enjoy this video of a cat frolicking with hardware while Kip’s “I Love Technology/Always and Forever” from Napoleon Dynamite plays.  (The señor has vetoed my request to sing this song at our wedding.)

Needs must: I have taught myself how to edit the xml of the WordPress export file which, thanks to the codex FAQ and the Windows xml editor, is not too hard, but rather time consuming.  The fruits of my lunch-hour labour are the last month of entries up and running.  I hope to continue in this importerly manner in the next few days.

This new theme sacrifices some of the things I liked about the last layout—the colour scheme, the design of the sidebar, the banner image—but has in its favour much greater width (I cannot abide empty space in a journal as word-heavy as mine) and posts editable from the main page.

One day I will have my own custom CSS, but not today.
