in poems

In response to this post at Bat Bean Beam.

Draw out now
and bear unto
the governor of the feast –

What I’ve got
you got to get
and put it in you –

you! Take some time
to love me.

**

The thing not to do
said our history teacher
is confuse
lebensraum with Liebestraum

but really,
my house
my table

my ancestors
our rules.

Shut up and drink.

It’s a haunting image, that. When I was not-in-the-army, sometimes the hospital I worked for and stayed at neglected to give me my dinner, but they never, not once, forgot to leave me the liquid part of my ration, which consisted of a 250ml mini-cask of wine. So when Justine came to visit me some months during the service I was able to show her a wardrobe full of little Tavernello wine boxes. It was quite a sight to behold.

Sweet cask white wine (aka “medium dry”) was the standard of my childhood among the adults of my family, most of whom were occasional social wine drinkers and no more. It didn’t offend sweet-sherry-drinking palates and lasted indefinitely in the fridge, the box’s plastic tap extended over the shelf edge for ease of pouring. Its ubiquity was suggested by the actions a friend who spent the 1980s and the first half of the 90s living in the northern hemisphere away from wine-drinking society. Said friend came to a dinner party earlier this century with a box of Liebestraum and was bewildered when the guests (and host) were taken aback by his choice.

I don’t mind telling you that the Blenheimer medium red (‘a blend of New Zealand and Chilean wines’) was our standard weeknight table red for a long time, until they changed the recipe a year or so ago and it became undrinkable. But until then it held its own against many bottled reds at the cheap end of the scale, and most pinot noirs and shirazes further up.

A google image search for Liebestraum yielded nothing I could use as an image, except this marvellous tableau.
