A cherished didactic method in the academy is that of beginning the study of every topic with a brisk canter through the founding fathers and occasional founding mothers.  It is a method that has its apogee in the notorious Oxford University English curriculum that bewildered and bored generations of students with studies of Anglo-Saxon (taught by the inventor of Bilbo Baggins and Hobbitry, Prof. J.R.R. Tolkien).
