North Otago Sojourn

3 June, 2009

in in Aotearoa, traveller's fragments,we are family

When we run away, it’s usually to North Otago.

We stayed at the Alpine Motel in Oamaru and the Millhouse in Waianakarua. My ancestor James Hutton was briefly a partner in the latter in the 1880s and my paternal grandmother and her sisters grew up in the village. You can see from the slideshow its wonderful gardens and proximity to the river and its restored bridge; the señor and I recommend it to you wholeheartedly.

We gorged on cheese, architecture and finding that sweet spot on the coast when you’re right beside the sea but can still see clearly the mountains. There’s something about that part of the country; ever since I read in the bone people of the sorrowful, singing kehua who came out of the ground at Moeraki, it seems to me to be made up of hallowed places. The family grave that we cleaned last November before I came acropper was shining and free of moss. I felt freed of mind and resolved this coming semester that in my professional practice I will wing it more and worry less.

I will reserve discussions of wedding cheese for a later post.

We also drank a lot of wine, but that was secondary.

I’ve been to Oamaru countless times (well; maybe 3-4 times a year until I was 13 and around 1-2 times a year in the last 10 years?) and it never ceases to divert me. This visit we went into the Basilica for the first time. (As a child Protestant, my church time there was previously divided between the Eveline Presbyterian Church and St. Mary’s Anglican, North Oamaru.)

I love that area as well. Have always wanted to stay at the Mill House – we always drive past!

We recommend it without reservation (hot water in the motel shower took a bit of tap-tweaking, but we put that down to the frost).
