Vegemite blues

in teaching & learning

I’m encouraging my Japanese exchange students to blog their way through their experiences here this semester.

Today’s reflection produced a concise series of pros and cons about this fair outpost, which I summarise below.  With which, save Vegemite, can one really disagree?

Pros

  • Open vistas
  • Clean cities
  • Parks and gardens
  • Salad
  • Opportunities for walking
  • Early nights and early rising

Cons

  • Strong sunlight
  • Sweet foods too sweet
  • Recalcitrant bus-drivers
  • Scarcity of native birds
  • Vegemite

“Recalcitrant bus-drivers” – your paraphrasing, surely?!

I cannot tell a lie; ’twas I who paraphrased. In the original story, a bus pulled over en route and the bus driver disappeared. Fifteen minutes later, the student, fearing mechanical failure, realised the bus driver was talking to a friend outside the bus.

Hopefully she can get through the semester without meeting any racist bus drivers; I’ve been on the bus often enough to see driverly attitudes that suggested an underlying impatience (at best) with Asian students.
