Share some esoteric knowledge from your childhood

Now of course, the fact that it’s esoteric doesn’t mean that it can’t be something that a lot of people knew. Today I’m going to tell you how to pop a Zap! box.

First, drink your Zap!, stopping several times to sing the advertising jingle (Zoom, zoom, zing, zing, zap!), including the funny little vocalisings that the girl makes halfway through. Leave a small amount of milk in the bottom of the carton. Then, release the flaps of the carton from their gummy moorings so that the ends, top and bottom, are pointing up. Inflate the carton by blowing as hard as you can through the straw. (You’re seven, so you can’t blow very hard.) You may need to hold your fingers around the hole where the straw goes in to stop any air escaping.

Very rapidly and gently place the Zap! carton on the concrete, then jump high, tucking your legs up under you and slamming your feet down on the carton as you land. The carton should pop–loudly–and the remaining milk fly out around you. If you don’t have much elevation from a standing position, try jumping from a slightly higher level such as a step. Note that the higher you get, the less likely it will be that you land on the carton.

This enterprise is best attempting when the teacher on duty is sympathetic to your carton-popping enterprise. Mrs. McCallum is rumoured not to mind if you leave a little milk in the bottom of the box, which may be useful to remind your mum when trying this at home.
